Beyond the classroom

Students are encouraged to be curious about France and French culture outside the classroom. The MFL club provides an opportunity for KS3 pupils to learn more about the country and the language with fun activities. Our Sixth Formers who study the language at A Level deliver those sessions. Additional sessions also enable pupils to have taster lessons in a variety of additional languages. This nurtures their enthusiasm for language learning while providing support with homework for example.

Further opportunities for languages learning and exposure to French include outings to the cinema (Les Intouchables, Thérèse Desqueyroux) or plays such as Le Tartuffe from Molière. Although these are primarily aimed at Sixth Formers, Years 10 and 11 are often invited to join them if it is accessible to them. The students also benefit from the support of a dedicated Language Assistant who not only helps them develop their language skills but also provides them with the possibility of reflection on current affairs in the French speaking world and beyond. 

A trip to Paris is run every other year and is aimed at KS4 and KS5 students. The language they have been learning in the classroom becomes a reality of daily life and this encourages them to speak further and develop their understanding of the culture of France. These trips also encourage some for our students to opt for languages and French in particular as part of their University course.

Finally, during Activities Week at the end of the year, around 40 pupils are taken to France (La Rochelle or The Loire Valley) to enjoy spending a week in France and discover cultural aspects such as oyster farming, castles, the local history and a cycling tour of the Ile de Ré. In 2014, 38 pupils spent 5 days in La Rochelle, discovering the town and its history. They also enjoyed learning about the local economy and in particular oyster farming (learning how to open them and tasting some in the process) and sample the beautiful landscapes and markets of the Ile de Ré.
