Curriculam Button Two

Key Stage 3 + 4

In Year 7 we approach shared reading of novels through the Guided Reading project that is currently based on the following texts:

Charlotte Sometime by Penelope Farmer
Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz
Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson
Carrie’s War by Nina Bawden
Marianne Dreams by Catherine Storr
My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece by Annabel Pitcher

Poetry is approached through writing, with an emphasis on understanding forms and techniques.

There is an introduction to active drama, and this draws on the reading that the class is doing. Year 8 is set, and although there is some variation in the set texts chosen by the teacher of each set, we often find that girls are able to approach the same text at different levels. ‘Northanger Abbey’ by Jane Austen, and ‘The Tulip Touch’ by Anne Fine work in this way. As this year is our introduction to Shakespeare, Susan Cooper’s ‘King of Shadows’ takes the reader to London in 1599 and prompts a good deal of research.

At this level we continue to write poetry but gradually introduce a more analytical approach.

Year 9 read more widely: ‘Jane Eyre’, ‘Rebecca’, ‘Sherlock Holmes’ and ‘Animal Farm’ are among the set novels and among the plays are ‘A View from the Bridge’ and ‘An Inspector Calls’: we are preparing for GCSE. Independent reading is particularly important at this stage, and the girls continue to be set reading homework and written responses to their reading.

Poetry will now include more texts from before 1900, and there will be a greater emphasis on accurate appreciative-analytical writing.

All girls follow the AQA course at GCSE, which involves a modern novel (currently we teach ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ and ‘Of Mice and Men’) a play (currently ‘The Crucible’ ) and the AQA Anthology of poetry ‘Moon on the Tides’.
